تا سال ۱۹۵۰ داروی اختصاصی برای درمان نشانه های سایکوتیک در دسترس نبود. در سال ۱۹۵۲ برای اولین بار داروی کلرپرومازین در یک بیمارستان ارتش در حومه پاریس تجویز شد. دو سال بعد این دارو با نام «لارگاکتیل» در فرانسه مورد استفاده قرار گرفت. نام این دارو بازتابی از اثرات وسیع آن می باشد. کلرپرومازین با داروهای خواب آور ابتدایی مثل هیدرات کلرال و باربیتوراتهاه متفاوت بود، زیرا اثراتی بیش از خواب آوری دارد و در مقادیر کم، تأثیر آن بر اضطراب و برافروختگی شاخص تر است .
